The births were distributed in the parish as follows:—

The 89 births which occurred in the Holborn Workhouse where of children whose
parents were not residents in Shoreditch, deducting these the corrected birth-rate
was 35.5 per thousand inhabitants, slightly higher than the rate in 1895, when it was
34.8. The London birth-rate for 1896 was 30.2. In table XXVII. a comparison of
the birth-rates in the several sub-districts of the parish is shewn.
MARRIAGES.
The Superintendent Registrar kindly informs me that 1,189 marriages were
registered in the parish during 1896, exclusive of Jewish marriages. There is a
distinct increase in the marriage rate. The following table shews the rates for the
past four years:—

The marriage-rate for the whole of London during 1896 was 18.0 per 1,000 of
the population.
DEATHS.
During the year, 2,622 parishioners died as compared with 2,860 in 1895, 2,466
in 1894, 3,146 in 1893, 2,828 in 1892, and 3,042 in 1891.
