From 1850 to 1895 the percentage increase has gradually
become less, so that in the last-mentioned period it had fallen to 1*10
per cent, per annum. It is on this latter basis that the increase of
the population from 1895 to the present time has been calculated.
The rate of increase in London was 1*00 per cent., and is
therefore slightly below that of Islington.

The Ages of the Population.—This estimate is based on
the results of the Census of 1891, for in 1895 no return was made
of the ages of the several persons living in London. At that period
the following information was obtained respiting Islington.
In every 1,000 of the population
118 were under 5 years of age.
206 were between 5 years and 15 years.

From these figures it has been calculated that the ages of the
