Population.—It was estimated to have been 348,731 at the
middle of the year. This is an increase of 3,723, or 1*1 per cent.,
on the population of 1898. This percentage increase is not nearly
so great as that which has been known in the past history of the
parish, for during the decennial periods from 1801 to 1891 the
average annual increases have been as follows:—
