Other Scheduled Offensive Trades. The Foreign Animals
Wharf being still in the occupation of the Military, the Offensive
Trades generally carried on therein have not yet been recommenced.
Smoke Nuisances. Twenty-five observations have been made
for smoke nuisances during the year, it being necessary to serve
Statutory Notices on three occasions, resulting in Police Court
proceedings being instituted in two instances.
House Drainage. Twenty-two drains have been constructed,
178 drainage systems have been reconstructed or repaired; 335 such
systems have also been opened, cleansed and amended; 62 surface
drains have been constructed; 105 drains and soil pipes have been
ventilated, 205 systems have been tested by smoke, 394 by water,
of which number 220 were found to be defective; 50 new soil pipes
and 276 traps have been fixed, together with 49 intercepting
chambers and fresh-air inlets, and 46 other chambers; 25 forecourts,
27 areas, 78 yards, 3 mews and stables, 8 washhouses drained; 5
cesspools abolished; 60 water-closets have been erected; a pan, trap
and water supply have been furnished throughout in 84 cases; pan
and traps only furnished in 174 cases; pans only in 28 cases, and other
fittings provided or improved in 457 cases, whilst the water supply
has been renewed in 190 instances. The water supply for lavatory
purposes has been disconnected from the drinking-water system in
3 instances. Public-house urinals have been cleansed and repaired
in 22 instances; 24 urinals were altered, 45 repaired or water laid
on, and 1 constructed.
Water Supply. During the year 2 water supply certificates
have been granted under Section 48 of the Public Health (London)
Act, 1891. Defective water fittings have been remedied in 130
cases; 27 water supplies have been reinstated where the supply
had been cut off; water fittings have been amended in 200 cases;
29 water supplies have been altered so as to draw direct from the
main; water supply provided in 8 instances, and cleansing, repairing
and covering cisterns in 9 cases.
FOOD.
Cowhouses. The four cowhouses in the Borough have been
visited on 6 occasions, and the required cleansing has been duly
enforced on 5 occasions.
Dairies, Cowsheds and Milkshops Order. At the commencement
of the year there were 120 premises on the Register
of Dairies and Milkshops; 8 new applications have been received
during the year and added to the Register, and 38 names have been
taken off, thus leaving a total of 90 premises now registered.
During the year 112 visits of inspection have been paid to these
premises; notices were served upon the occupiers in 7 cases, 6 of
which were for dairies requiring limewashing and 2 for sanitary
defect.
