LONDON COUNTY COUNCIL (GENERAL POWERS) ACT, 1904.
During the year my attention was drawn by the Medical
Officer (Education) of the London County Council to 516 houses
in the Borough from which children were attending school in a
verminous condition, and I was asked to deal with them under the
above Act. I had all these inspected and found that of the 516
homes, 46 had verminous rooms and 12 had both verminous rooms
and bedding or clothing. The remainder were clean and free from
vermin.
REMOVAL AND DISPOSAL OF HOUSE REFUSE.
The total quantity of refuse removed from occupied houses in
the Borough to the Destructor by the Council's contractors during
the year 1916 amounted to 31,424 tons 16 cwts. During the same
period the prices paid by the Borough Council for its removal were,
for the North Division 4s. 2d., and for the South Division 4s. 3d.,
per ton. On the 1st April, 1916, the contractors were granted by
the Borough Council a 6 per cent, increase on the above prices.
The total cost for removal for the whole year amounted to
£7,631 16s. Id.
Owing to the difficulty of removing the clinker and labour
troubles, it became necessary to deposit some of the house
refuse on shoots in the neighbourhood of the Borough. The
quantity so deposited during the year was 6,688 cubic yards.
The cost of this is included in the total given above.
