Report on the sanitary condition of the Hackney District for the year 1916

Health Department. These totals include disinfections after
measles, whooping cough and tuberculosis, in addition to those in
connection with notifiable infectious diseases.

(b)Articles of Clothing, Furniture, &c.—The number of articles under this head disinfected during last year was as follows:—

There were also 144 articles destroyed on request from the
owners.
(c) Public Library Books.—During the past year 184 books
from homes in which infectious diseases had occurred were disinfected.
Of this number 177 had been borrowed from the Hackney
Borough Public Library and 7 from other libraries.
THE SHELTER.
During 1916 there were 5 persons admitted to the shelter
whilst their homes were being disinfected. The cost of maintenance
for the 5 persons thus admitted was £1 9s. 6d.
CLEANSING OF PERSONS ACT, 1897.
The baths provided by the Borough Council under the above
Act for the cleansing of verminous persons were in constant use
during last year, 1,287 baths being given during that period. This
total shows an increase of 99 upon the number given during 1915.
Of the 1,287 baths given, 726 were sulphur baths for scabies
and 561 for pediculi. The great majority of those persons presenting
themselves for baths were children from the elementary schools in
the Borough. These children received 1,234 baths, an increase of
119 upon the number given during 1915. Of those persons receiving
hot baths, 28 were men and 533 children; of those receiving
sulphur baths, 16 were men, 9 women and 701 children.
