Register at the beginning of the year, 17 have been added during
the year, and 21 have been taken off, leaving a total now on the
Register of 238. This total number includes 19 laundries, 35
dressmakers, 8 fuel and firewood works, 4 cycle works, 6 milliners,
and various others, including workplaces, such as 4 blacksmiths,
12 barge builders, 3 builders' yards, &c. Information has been
sent to H.M. Inspector of Factories with respect to 10 new
workshops and one new factory, and also 10 instances where
protected persons were employed on premises no abstract being
displayed. One complaint has been received from H.M. Inspector
and also 13 intimations respecting alleged new workshops ; of
these 13 however, only six were really new premises, the other
seven relating to premises which had already been notified by us
to H.M. Inspector.
The inspections have revealed the presence of defects or
insanitary conditions requiring the service of many verbal, and
in addition, 45 written notices, 17 of these being in respect of
workshops, including workshop laundries, 21 in respect of workplaces,
and 7 in respect of factories, including factory laundries.
The notices had reference to want of cleanliness generally in
105 cases, want of ventilation in 3 cases, want of drainage of
floors in 6 cases, overcrowding in 1 case, insufficient sanitary
accommodation in 6 cases, unsuitable or defective sanitary
accommodation 15 cases, and other nuisances 31 cases. These
defects have all been attended to.
Outworkers' Registers. Fifty-nine lists of Outworkers,
containing 182 names and addresses, have been received during
the year from Medical Officers of Health for other Districts ; 26
lists, containing 195 names, have been received from employers
