SANITARY WORK.
The Table on pages 71 to 75 summarizes, as far as is possible,
the Sanitary Work of the Department; from this it will be seen
that a total of 14,561 houses and premises have been inspected
or reinspected during the year; 1,237 intimation notices have
been served, and 338 statutory notices.
With the exception of prosecutions in connection with the
Sale of Food and Drugs Acts, it was only found necessary to
institute Police Court proceedings in eight cases, three being in
connection with nuisances from the emission of black smoke, one
being for not having a proper and sufficient water supply to an
occupied house ; one for deficiency of water closet accommodation
; one for having the premises dirty; one under the Bylaws
with reference to paving of yards, and one for having no
name or address on an Ice Cream barrow or stall.
There were altogether throughout the year 261 complaints
entered in the Public Complaint Register of the Department;
these were in each case carefully investigated, and any necessary
action immediately taken, thus there are none of these matters
left outstanding or unattended to.
Bakehouses. Two hundred and fourteen inspections have
been made of the various Bakehouses in the Borough, and 31
nuisances found therein have been abated as the result.
Factories and Workshops. Three hundred and ten
inspections have been paid to these premises within the Borough
