Housing of the Working Classes. Premises have been
found to be overcrowded in 24 cases, which have all been abated,
and in 8 cases the illegal use of underground rooms has been
discontinued. Five hundred and fifteen houses have been
generally repaired; 313 premises have been cleansed, limewashed,
and repaired; 33 have been improved as regards their
ventilation; 169 premises have had the walls and ceilings
cleansed throughout, and 236 premises have been partially
cleansed; leaky house roofs and gutters have been repaired in
326 cases; nuisances from dampness have been abated in 151
cases; dampness of walls has been remedied in 112 cases;
direct connection between the internal sanitary fittings of houses
and the drain have been disconnected, trapped, and amended in
268 cases; similarly 100 stack pipes have been disconnected
trapped, and amended; 6 houses have been abolished as unfit
for habitation; and want of underfloor ventilation has also been
attended to in 7 cases.
Houses Let in Lodgings. Out of a number of such
premises which have been reported to the Committee, it has been
decided during 1908 to register 10, which together with the
thirteen on the register at the end of 1907, gives a total of 23
premises on the Register of Houses Let in Lodgings at the end
of the year. More recently, however, as a result of more
pressing enquiries by the London County Council as to what this
Council was doing in the matter, the Public Health Committee
have directed that more houses of this class shall be placed upon
the Register so that they may be inspected more regularly.
House Drainage. Two hundred and eighty-four house
drainage systems have been reconstructed; 255 such systems
