have also been opened, cleansed and amended; 85 new
systems and 248 surface drains have been constructed; 104
systems have been tested by smoke and 390 by water, of which
number 291 were found to be defective; 66 new soil pipes and
490 traps have been fixed, together with 55 intercepting chambers,
and 10 other chambers. Four cesspools have been abolished;
58 areas, 168 yards, and 6 mews and stables have been
thoroughly drained. Forty-nine water closets and 1 urinal
have been erected, and 1 abolished; a pan, trap and water supply
have been furnished throughout in 176 cases, and other fittings
in 390 cases, whilst the water supply has been renewed in 138
instances. The water supply for lavatory purposes has been
disconnected from the drinking water system in 32 instances.
Fifty-five public-house urinals have been cleansed and repaired,
whilst a water supply has been laid on or repaired at 3 such
conveniences.
Combined Drainage. The very useful Bill, to which
attention was drawn in my last Annual Report, did not, however,
obtain Parliamentary sanction during the year and is again to be
brought forward during the current year, when it is to be devoutly
hoped that it may become law.
SEWERAGE.
As stated in my last Annual Report, this department still
continues to receive complaints as to offensive smells emanating
from the London County Council's main sewer as it passes
through the Borough. Communications have frequently passed
between the two authorities. Conferences between the two
authorities have been held, various promises have been made
and withdrawn. Much trouble has been occasioned to this
department in obtaining sites for the erection of ventilating
