Exhaust Flues to deal with this nuisance which certainly is
one of a very grave character.
Bakehouses. Two hundred and four inspections have been
made of the various Bakehouses in the Borough, and 38
nuisances found therein have been abated as the result.
Factories and Workshops. Three hundred and fifty-two
inspections have been paid to these premises within the Borough
during the year. There were 246 Workshop premises on the
Register at the beginning of the year, 14 have been added during
the year, and 18 have been taken off, leaving a total now on the
Register of 242. This total number includes 21 laundries, 40
dressmakers, 8 fuel and firewood works, 5 cycle works, 7 milliners,
and various others, including workplaces, such as 4 blacksmiths,
12 barge builders, 3 builders' yards, &c. Information has been
sent to H.M. Inspector of Factories with respect to 9 new
workshops and 4 instances of young persons or females being
employed on premises where no abstract is displayed. One
complaint has been received from H.M. Inspector, and also 3
intimations respecting new workshops.
The inspections have revealed the presence of defects or
insanitary conditions requiring the service of 108 written notices,
62 of these being in respect of workshops, including workshop
laundries, 40 in respect of workplaces, and 6 in respect of factories,
including factory laundries. The notices had reference to want
of cleanliness generally in 103 cases, want of ventilation in 4
cases, want of drainage of floors in 13 cases, insufficient sanitary
accommodation in 11 cases, unsuitable or defective sanitary
accommodation 15 cases, and other nuisances 39 cases. These
defects have all been attended to.
