SANITARY WORK.
The Table on pages 78 to 82, summarizes, as far as is possible,
the Sanitary Work of the Department; from this it will be seen
that a total of 15,453 houses and premises have been inspected
or re-inspected during the year; 1,383 intimation notices have
been served, and 352 statutory notices.
With the exception of prosecutions in connection with the
Sale of Food and Drugs Acts, it was only found necessary to
institute Police Court proceedings in one case, that being in
connection with a nuisance from the emission of black smoke.
In this case the defendants were fined 10s. with £2 2s. costs.
There were altogether throughout the year 303 complaints
entered in the Public Complaint Register of the Department;
these were in each case carefully investigated, and any necessary
action immediately taken, thus there are none of these matters
left outstanding or unattended to.
One of the most serious complaints received has reference
to the large quantity of dust produced in a somewhat recently
established business in this district. Large quantities of empty
cement bags being brought to the premises on the River Bank
for cleansing and repair prior to their being put into use again.
An enormous amount of dust is produced and the workers and
their clothing together with premises in the neighbourhood
become literally covered with it. Many consultations have been
held with the Proprietors of the business, the Factory Inspector,
and the Officers of this Council. Extensive lavatories and bath
accommodation have been provided for the use of the Staff, and
