Workshops.
Workshops include any premises (not being factories) in which
manual labour is exercised by way of trade or for purposes of gain
in or incidental to the making, altering, repairing, finishing or adapting
for sale of any article, and to or over which the employer of the
persons there has the right of access or control.
The workshops in Battersea were up to the early part of 1911
under the supervision of two Workshop Inspectors, one male and one
female, who dealt respectively with premises where male or female
labour is employed. Owing to the resignation of the female Workshop
Inspector and the decision of the Council to postpone the filling
of the vacancy pending a report from the Medical Officer of Health as
to the necessity for doing so, the work of this officer was handed over
to the male Workshop Inspector. A report (vide Appendix) was
subsequently submitted by the Medical Officer of Health at the end
of the year, and as a result the Council decided to fill the vacancy,
and Miss Ross Brown, who filled a similar appointment at Warrington,
was appointed.

The following is a list of the workshops in the register at the end of 1912:—
