Report on the sanitary condition of the Hackney District for the year 1909

Dairies and Milk Shops.—During the past year 27 milk
places were removed from the register and 27 new
milk places added, thus the total number on the register
at the end of 1909 was the same at the end of
1908. The actual proprietors of milk premises have
been changed in 88 cases. Inspector Bobbitt reports that on
these visits he discovered 10 dirty utensils. In 5 other instances
minor repairs and cleansing were required. The vendors were
cautioned against allowing their utensils to remain dirty; and
notices were served for the repairs and cleansing. These
notices were duly attended to.
Offensive Trades.—At the end of 1909 there was only one
premises in the Borough licensed to carry on an offensive trade,
viz., a tripe boiler. Inspector Bobbitt reports that he made
22 visits of inspection to these premises during the year, and had
occasion to serve an intimation on the proprietor for some small
repairs which were needed. The notice was immediately
attended to.
The trade of fish-skin dressing which had been carried on
in certain sheds on the land adjacent to the Hackney Marsh has
been discontinued and the sheds removed.
Slaughter-houses-There were 24 licensed slaughterhouses
in the Borough at the end of 1908. During the year
1909 the number was reduced to 21. The private slaughterhouses
in Hackney are becoming less every year. In 1893 the
total number in Hackney at that time was 38. Inspector Bobbitt
reports that he made 384 visits of inspection to the slaughterhouses
during 1909. During that time he found it necessary to
serve only one intimation notice for some small repairs he
thought necessary. On the 25th September the Public Health
Committee made their annual inspection of the slaughter-houses
