REMOVAL OF HOUSE REFUSE.
During 1908 there were collected by the Contractors from
houses in the Borough 38,569 tons, 5 cwt., 3 qrs., and 2 lbs. of
house refuse and removed to the Destructor at a total cost of
£8,447 2s. 6d. From the North Division of the Borough 18,041
tons, 4 cwts., 1 qr., 14 lbs., were removed at the rate of 4s. per
ton during the months of January, February and March, and at
the rate of 4s. 6d. per ton during the remaining months of the
year—the total cost for the North Division for the whole year
being £3,930 13s. 3d. From the South Division 20,528 tons, 1 cwt.,
1 qr., 16 lbs, were removed at the rate of 4s. 4d. per ton during the
months of January, February and March, and at the rate of 4s. 6d.
during the remaining months of the year—the total cost for the
South Division for the whole year being £4,516 9s. 3d.
The total amount of refuse removed during the whole year from
the whole Borough shows an increase of nearly 183 tons and a tota
increase in cost of £418 9s. 9d. This increased cost is not due
solely to the increased tonnage, but was mostly due to the increased
price charged per ton by the Contractors under the new Contracts
which came into force on April 1st, 1908. The increased prices are
given above.
The cost of disposal of the house refuse removed to the
destructor during 1908, which includes the destruction of the refuse
by fire and the disposal of clinker arising from the refuse, together
with the disposal of tins and other non-combustible material has
