Report on the sanitary condition of the Hackney District for the year 1908

inspection to these premises during the year and served two notices
to remedy some small defects and for the removal of an excessive
accumulation of manure. The notices were immediately complied
with. On the 6th September the Public Health Committee made
an inspection of the cow-houses of the Borough. These were all
found to be in a satisfactory condition, with the exception of one
cow-house which was dirty and untidy. A notice was subsequently
served upon the cow-keeper to remedy the nuisance found.
Dairies and Milk Shops.—During 1908 there were 35 milk
places removed from the register and 24 new milk places added.
The total on the register at the end of 1908 was 362. The
Inspector reports that he made 1,218 visits during the year to these
premises. During these visits he discovered dirty utensils in 35 of
the milk places; there were also discovered 7 premises, on the
owners of which it was necessary to serve notices for repairs. The
notices were immediately attended to.
Offensive Trades.—At the end of 1908 there was only one
premises in the Borough licensed to carry on an offensive trade,
viz., a tripe boiler. The Inspector reports that he made 16 visits
during the year to these premises. No breach of the regulation
relating to offensive trades was discovered.
The London County Council resolved during 1908 to add to the
list of offensive trades that of fish-skin dressing. By-laws relating
to this trade have been made by the Council and came into force on
January 1st, 1909. In the appendix will be seen a copy of these
By-laws.
Slaughter-houses.—There were 25 slaughter houses in the
Borough at the end of 1908. During the year one was struck off
the list by the London County Council. The Inspector reports that
he made 393 visits of inspection to the slaughter-houses of the
Borough during 1908. As a result he had only to serve three notices
for slight repairs. On the 6th September the Public Health
Committee made their annual inspection of the slaughter-houses of
