It will be noted from the above table that the largest number
of cases notified occurred in the Central and South-West subdistricts.
The deaths from diphtheria and membranous croup during the
year numbered 44. This is equal to a mortality rate of 12.5 per cent.

diphtheritic disease for all London for the same period is 0.15 per
1,000 living.
During the year 208 swabbings from throats of persons
suspected to be suffering from diphtheria were bacteriologically
examined, 74 of which gave positive and 127 negative results, and
7 were doubtful.
Typhoid or Enteric Fever.—During the year 1908 there
were 66 cases notified as typhoid or enteric fever; but of these 5 cases
were found later on not to be suffering from this disease, thus
reducing the genuine cases to 61. This 'is a fall of 35 on the
number of genuine cases of enteric fever notified during 1907.
The attack rate for the year 1908 is .26 per 1,000 living persons.
The chart shows the disease to be present in the Borough
