Ages at Death. —Of the 1,383 deaths, 329 were under a year old, which
is 4 above the average of the preceding ten years. The deaths under five
years were 528, or 30 below the average of the first quarters of these years.

The deaths above five years numbered 855 and were 255 above the average,

Causes of Death (Classified).—Compared with the first quarters of the
preceding eight years the deaths from diseases of the following classified causes
showed a decrease, viz.:-Miasmatic Diseases 35, Constitutional 32, Developmental
51, Nervous System 46, Respiratory 123, Digestive System 13.
Venereal 1, Dietic 1, Urinary System 2, Reproductive System 2, Integumentary
System 4, Violence 1, and from Ill-defined causes 22; whilst from the undermentioned
diseases there was an increase, namely, 4 from Diarrhœa, 7 from
Septic Diseases, 4 from Organs of Special Sense, 11 from Circulatory System,
1 from Parasitic Diseases, 3 from Lymphatic system, and 1 from Diseases of
Bones and Joints.
Infantile Mortality.—There were 329 deaths of infants under a year
old, or 4 above the average (325) of the preceding ten years at this period of
the year. These deaths represented an infantile mortality rate of 145 per 1,00)
infants born, as compared with 135 per 1,000 in the first quarters 1893-02. In
London the rate was 127 ; and in the encircling Boroughs 121. In the latter
the mortality in the separate Boroughs was as follows:—St. Pancras 123, Stoke
Newington 127, Hackney 115, Hornsey 100, Finsbury 136 and Shoreditch 123.
