Wards.
The Wards are eleven in number, and vary in size from 137 acres in
St. Mary to 417 acres in Tufnell and in Highbury, for these practically cover
a similar area (vide Table II.)
Area.
The Area of Islington is 3,092 acres (actually 3,091.5), or nearly five
square miles. Large though it is, it is exceeded by the following Metropolitan
Boroughs Woolwich 8,276, Lewisham 7,014, Greenwich 3,852, Wandsworth
9,129, Camberwell 4,480, Hackney 3,288, and Lambeth 4,080 acres ; all of
which possess very large lands yet to be built on (vide Table III.)
Population.
When, however, the population of Islington is considered, it is found to
possess not only the largest population of the cities and boroughs of London,
but also to be one of the most densely inhabited districts. Its population at
the middle of 1902 is estimated by the Registrar-General to be 337,268.
Lambeth with its estimated population of 305,102, approaches it most nearly,
while Stepney follows with 300,551.
A comparative statement showing the population, area, and density of
each of the Metropolitan Boroughs has been prepared and is given in
Table III.
Males and Females.—The 337,268 persons living in the Borough are
estimated to be composed of 160,368 males and 176,900 females. These again
are estimated to be of the ages as shown in Table IV.
Table IV. has enabled calculations to be made which show that in
every 1,000 of the population
108 are under 5 years old, as against 118 at the census of 1891.
185 are between 5 and 15 years old, as against 206 in 1891.

From this statement it is seen that there has been a decrease in the
proportion of children and juveniles under 15 years old since 1891, whereas
the proportion of adults has increased.
