REPORT
OF THE
Medical Officer of Health
FOR THE YEAR 1902.
SUB-DISTRICTS, AREAS, POPULATION, & DENSITIES.
Sub-Districts.
The Borough is now divided into seven sub-districts for the purpose
of registration. This change came into force on August 1st, 1901, when the
sub-district of Upper Holloway was divided into three sub-districts, Tufnell,
Upper Holloway, and Tollington. In consequence of the change having been
effected at the middle of the year, no alteration was made in the last Annual
Report, as it was considered more desirable for many reasons, but particularly
on account of the labour it would save, to commence to utilize the statistics
at the commencement of a year than at its middle.
This is the second change that has been made in the sub-districts during
a very recent period, for on January 1st, 1900, the sub-district of Islington
South-West was abolished, part of it was divided into the sub-districts now
named Lower Holloway and Barnsbury respectively, and the remainder was
added to the sub-district of Islington South-East.
The recent sub-division of the Borough into seven sub-districts, to each of
which a Registrar has been assigned, is a change for the better, for it not only
lends itself to the convenience of the inhabitants for the registration
of their births and deaths, but also enables the Medical Officer of Health to
more easily obtain accurate statistics for smaller areas of the Borough than
were hitherto available. Even now, however, the populations of these areas
are very unequal, for they range from 32,458 in Tufnell, and 34,442 in Upper
Holloway, to 64,519 in Highbury, and 75,610 in South-East Islington.
There are, also, considerable differences in their areas, as shown in
Table I., for whereas Upper Holloway covers only 290 acres, South-East
Islington occupies 545, and Highbury 798 acres.
