Circumstances of the family: Mr. and Mrs. T. occupied, with
their seven children, three rooms in a five-roomed house in E
Place. Mr. T. was a journeyman cabinet-maker, his wife being
engaged at home in attending to the family. The rooms occupied
were two on the ground floor, and one on the first floor, the other
rooms in the house being occupied by another family, consisting
of father, mother and one child. No member of this family was
affected.
At the beginning of this outbreak the house was examined for
sanitary defects, the drains being tested more than once, but none
was found; but towards the end of the outbreak it was found that
they were defective and were reconstructed. I am of opinion that
this defect did not lead to the spread of the disease through the
family, but personal infection was responsible for its spread.
In the investigation of all these cases of enteric fever, close
enquiry was made as to whether the ordinary causes for the spread
of enteric fever were operative, but with negative result.
Typhus.—One case of this disease was notified in the Borough
during 1905, and this case occurred in the Central sub-district.
Continued Fever.—Under this head one case of fever was
certified in the Borough during 1905.
Puerperal Fever.—There were eight cases of puerperal fever
notified in Hackney during 1905, of which four were removed to
hospital. The deaths numbered 2, which is equivalent to a mortality
rate of 25 per cent, attacked. The attack rate is 1.3 per 1,000 births,
and the mortality .34 per 1,000 births.
Plague.—No case of plague occurred in Hackney during the
year 1905.
Erysipelas.—There were 286 cases of erysipelas notified in the
Borough of Hackney during 1905, which is equivalent to an attack
rate of 1.2 per 1,000 living persons. Of this number 72 were
removed to hospital, which is equal to 25 per cent. of the total notified.
