This family, consisting of father, mother and five children, occupied
a tenement of two rooms. The father at this time was out of
employment. The only insanitary condition found on inspection
here was dirty rooms.
Group 5.—Alice W., aged 4 years, and Daisy W., aged 10 years,
of 78, C. Road, fell ill about the same time, October 8th. They
were notified as suffering from enteric fever on the 16th October,
and removed to hospital on the same day.
Daisy C. and William C., aged respectively 7 and 9 years, of the
same address, fell ill, the former on about the 1st October, the
latter about the oth October, and were both notified as suffering
from enteric fever on the 10th October. They were removed to
hospital on the same date. These children were members of
another family in the same house, on the upper floor.
Walter W., aged 7 years, fell ill with diarrhoea and sickness on
or about the 18th September, and was nursed at home by his
mother. He kept his bed about three weeks, and his recovery
afterwards was very slow. The illness of the other members of the
family, in the meantime, aroused suspicions that Walter's illness
was probably enteric fever. He was consequently notified as
suffering from enteric fever on the 21st October, although acute
symptoms had left him, and was removed to the Fever Hospital on
the same date. (His retention at hospital confirmed this suspicion.)
During the illness of Walter the children on the next floor (the C.'s)
had free access, as well as his own brothers and sisters, to the room
where he was ill; and Mrs. C., mother of Daisy and William C.,
assisted alternately with Mrs. W. in nursing Walter, especially at
night, when his condition was at its worst. The family of the W.'s
consisted of father, mother and four children, the father being a
porter. They occupied four rooms, two in the basement and two
on the first floor. The C. family consisted of father and mother
and two children, occupying two rooms on the second floor. The
father's occupation was that of a labourer. The only insanitary
condition found on inspection was dirty rooms and bedding.
