Group 6.—Clara F., aged 15 years, of 70, F. P. Eoad, fell ill on
about the 11th October, 1905, and was notified on the 21st October
to be suffering from enteric fever, and removed on the same date to
the Fever Hospital. Florence E., aged 35 years, of the same
address, fell ill about the 8th November, and was notified as
suffering from enteric fever on 17th November. She was retained
at home and, nursed by her mother. Clara F. was nursed before
removal to hospital (about two weeks in bed) alternately by her
grandmother and Florence E. She is said to have suffered badly from
diarrhoea during the last week before removal to hospital. No
insanitary condition was noted on inspection of these premises.
Group 7.—Florence C., aged 23 years, of 126, D. Road, fell
ill on or about the 26th September, and was notified by the medical
attendant as suffering from diphtheria on the 10th October, and
was removed to hospital on the same day. This diagnosis was
found by the Asylums Board's Medical Officer to be incorrect, and
he notified the case as one of enteric fever. Later enquiries
revealed the fact that a brother of the patient, Thomas C., aged
20 years, and residing at the same address, was ill at home, and
kept to his bed from October 3rd to October 13th. He suffered
from sickness and diarrhoea during this time, and his temperature
at one time was 103°. He gradually recovered, but was very weak
for some time after. (His mother and a sister, Louisa, attended
upon him during his illness.) Another sister of the patient,
Josephine, aged 13 years, was also ill at home during this period,
being treated by a local practitioner from October 19th to 21st, but
was sent away to a sister, with whom she remained three days;
but this sister, being unable to keep her longer, sent her to another
married sister, with whom she remained. This sister states the
child was very weak when she arrived, and thinks she did suffer
from diarrhoea a short time before she came to her.
On the 6th November, Louisa C., another sister of above and
living at 126, D. Road, fell ill and was notified as suffering from
enteric fever on the 14th November, being removed to hospital on
the same day.
