According to the Census Returns the
tants of the City were in 1891 better housed, as
judged by the average of rooms, than the other
districts mentioned in these Tables. Thus, while
the number of residents in the City living in
tenements of four rooms or less constituted 49 7
per cent, of the total population, in the
Metropolis as a whole, the proportion was 55.3
per cent., and in the Central Districts 67.9
per cent. Similarly in none of the classes of
tenements was the proportion of overcrowding
in the City as high as in either of the other
districts. On the other hand, the percentage
proportions of those living in tenements of four
rooms or less, living under overcrowded conditions,
were a little higher than those for the
Metropolis, but considerably lower than those
for the "Central Districts."
BIRTHS.
During the fifty-two weeks which have been
taken as the year 1900, 403 births were
registered, viz., 204 of males and 199 of females.
