Sixteen Nursing Sisters were obtained for
night and day work, and two medical men were
in almost hourly attendance. Nor was this provision
excessive, since at one period five women,
and forty men, were in bed under treatment.
Respecting the remedial measures adopted in
coping with the outbreak from its inception,
repeated and thorough inspections were made of
the sanitary fittings of the premises, the main
drainage in the basement tested as far as
possible, the supply of water and system of
its storage, milk, butter and other articles of
food examined, and bacteriological and physiological
investigations made, at a considerable
cost.
The water-cisterns, having been emptied and
cleansed, were charged with a strong solution of
chlorinated lime, which was allowed to remain
for six hours and subsequently drawn off by the
delivery taps, followed by free flushing with
clean water. Steam under pressure was also
forced through the pipes.
