As the cases multiplied, the type of fever
assumed a more severe and definite form; there
was a copious rash on the skin, diarrhoea,
peritonitis [with suspected perforation], free
hæsmorrhage from the bowels, and in one case
"ulcerative endocarditis," which ended fatally.
Examinations were made with Widal's test at
the Clinical Laboratory at St. Bartholomew's
Hospital and other places, and gave the
characteristic reaction of the bacillus typhosus.
With the exceptions of the case removed to
St. Mary's Hospital on the 5th December, the
four removed by the Metropolitan Asylums
Board on the 22nd January, and the four taken
two days later to St. Bart.'s, the remaining
forty-five cases were treated at Holborn Circus.
For the latter purpose a suite of rooms was
adapted for use as a temporary hospital, and cut
off from all communication with the rest of the
house by double folding iron doors, the corridor
being approached by a separate stone staircase.
