Sanitary Committee, and subsequently by the
Court of Common Council, and all that could be
urged by the opponents to the scheme, patiently
and courteously listened to and argued ; but the
petitioners refused to be comforted, and a public
agitation was set afloat which eventuated in an
appeal to the Local Government Board to
interfere with what was, purely and simply, a
determination on the part of the Corporation to
carry out its (the Local Government Board's)
own Orders. The result of this appeal to Cassar
has not yet been made known to the uninitiated,

carry out its obligations, and on the 16th
December last the foundation stone was laid by
the Right Honourable Sir Alfred James Newton,
Bart., Lord Mayor, supported by the Sheriffs,
the Alderman of Cripplegate Ward (Sir Henry
Knight), with the assistance of the Chairman
(Walter Low, Esq.) and Members of the Sanitary
Committee, the principal officers, and a large
number of visitors.
