Report on the sanitary condition of the City of London for the year 1899

It is satisfactory to record a considerable rise
in the number of persons vaccinated in 1899
over the two previous years in spite of the
efforts of the anti-vaccination fanatics, who
predicted exactly the opposite results from their
crusade.
This is the more noteworthy since the number
of successful vaccinations had previously
dropped from 78.9 per cent. in 1894, to 45.3
per cent. in 1898, in the City alone, and in a
very large proportion throughout the Kingdom.
Only Ten parents took advantage of the
so-called "conscientious objection" in order to
avoid having their children protected. The
number last year was 33.
All intelligent persons will recognise and
rejoice over this return to reason on the part of
the least-favoured, in point of education, of our
fellow-citizens.
