with Mr. Huddart with a view of the
Preservatives Committee either limiting their
requisitions upon this Department or obtaining
additional help from other sources.
The result of this interview was, that
Mr. Huddart wrote the following letter to the
Chemist at the Government Laboratory, and
favoured me with a copy, which is as under:—
"Local Government Board,
"Whitehall, S.W.,
"18th October, 1899.
"Dear Mr. Lewin,
"I saw Dr. Sedgwick Saunders yesterday with a
"view of asking whether he could arrange to render
"larger help in connection with the sampling of
"imported foods than has resulted from the information
"supplied by the Customs.
"Dr. Saunders told me that much time is taken up
"by his Inspectorate in sampling under present arrange"ments
for the Preservatives Committee, but he is
"very anxious to do what he can, and he has agreed to
"instruct his Inspectors to secure such samples as they
"can from imported firms which appear on the Customs
"lists, apart from and in addition to actually listed
"importations. In this way I trust that many more
"samples than have hitherto been taken will be available
"for your purposes.
