The question whether articles of food should
be dealt with as being adulterated in cases where
a foreign ingredient has been added with the
object of improving their appearance, or, in cases
of perishable articles, for retarding decomposition,
has, during the past year, been much discussed
both by manufacturers and the public.
As a consequence the Local Government
Board referred the subject to a Departmental
Committee.
This Committee, known as the "Preservatives
Committee," is now sitting with the object of
inquiring into the use of preservatives and colouring
matters in the preservation and colouring of
food, and many samples of articles of food have
been taken in the City, at the request of the
Committee, by your Inspectors of Food and
Drugs, who up to the present have sent, through
me, 39 samples, including cheese, condensed milk,
bacon, potted meats, tinned rabbit, preserved
fruits, beer, wine, and lard, to the Government
Laboratories.
