Public Lighting,
Your Board has for several years past had under consideration
the question of street nomenclature at night by
means of the public lamps, and have tried various modes
by which the names of the streets could be made known,
but none proved successful, and your Board last year decided
to place 50 square lanterns of larger size with tablets
containing the names of the streets in substitution of the
present circular well lamps at the junctions of certain of the
streets in the District. This has since been done and appears
to give general satisfaction.
As occasion has arisen during the year new circular lamps
have been fixed in lieu of the old square lanterns ; the total
number of the new lamps in the District at the present time
is 922, each consuming 5 feet of gas per hour, and of the old
square pattern lamps, 148. There are also 70 lamps of
larger size at the corners of certain streets other than those
above referred to, and on the crossing refuges, making a
total of 1,140 public lamps in the District belonging to the
Board.
As in previous years, the lamps in the main public ways
within the District were lighted during dark and foggy days
at the cost of £3 4s. 7d. for the year.
Street Refuges.
A new street-crossing refuge was formed during the year
at the south end of Bedford Place. The refuges now
existing within the St. Giles District are as follows:—
