requested me to report to you on the subject. This I did
in the early part of the present year, and your Board subsequently
resolved to employ the -whole of the Board's staff of
men and certain of the boys, with such extra vans as might
be needed in the cleansing of the streets on Sundays, at an
estimated additional cost to that then incurred for Sunday
work, of £212 8s. The result is that whereas only the
market streets and some of the principal thoroughfares were
under the old system attended to, nearly the whole of the
Streets of the District are now cleansed on Sundays.
The main thoroughfares in the District were watered
twice on Sundays during the summer months, between the
hours of 7 a.m. and 1 p.m., when the condition of the
weather rendered it desirable.
Bemoval or Snow.
Snow fell during the month of January of the present
year, and necessitated the employment of additional men
for its removal. The bulk of the snow was carted to the
Thames Embankment and thrown over the parapet wall
into the Biver Thames, and a quantity was disposed of by
flushing with water obtained from the New Biver Company's
mains. The total cost of getting rid of the snow was
£583 6s. 6d.
