Street Cleansing,
The scavenging of the District was performed by a staff
of men employed by the Board, numbering 38 men (consisting
of 1 foreman, 5 gangers, and 32 sweepers) and 28 boys,
the total scavenging staff amounting to 66 men and boys.
In addition to the manual labour, two sweeping machines,
drawn by horses,were also used in sweeping the carriageways.
The street sweepings were carted away by contract, and
amounted to a total of 5,575 van loads, equal to over 16,000
cubic yards. There were also removed, 1,547 van loads of
refuse matter from the gully pits, &c amounting to over
4,500 yards.
The carriage-ways of the main thoroughfares were washed
frequently during the year by means of water distributed by
watering-carts. The cost of this washing is included in the
two items of cost for street cleansing and street watering
given hereafter.
The question of the expediency of cleansing the carriageways
of those streets paved with wood and asphalte by means
of water taken from the Water Company's mains through hose
and jet, was referred to me by your Works Committee
to report upon, which I accordingly did at great length on
the 5th January.—The Committee ordered the Eeport to be
printed, and it was carefully considered by the Committee,
but no recommendation to your Board with reference to the
same was made.
