The births registered in the whole Parish and in
its northern half were above the decennial averages
(see Table 6). and those registered in the southern
half, below. The birth-rates were in every instance
below the mean rates for the decennium. The births
registered in North Paddington have been exceeded
once only, in 1893, when 2,567 births were registered,
whilst the total for South Paddington for 1895 is
the third lowest recorded in the eleven years 1885-95,
the totals for 1893 (444) and 1894 (411) being the
only two below it. In London the birth-rate in 1895
was 30*5 per 1,000, 1.3 below the mean rate for the
decennium, and in England and Wales, last year's
rate (30.3) was 0.9 below the decennial mean rate.
