Illegitimate Births.
By the courtesy of the Registrar-General, the
numbers of illegitimate births registered in Paddington
since 1884 have been ascertained, no returns of
such births having been made by the local Registrars
prior to the commencement of last year. The average
annual number of such births during the decennium
1885-94 was 150, the total for last year being 125.
The mean rate for the decennium was 1'28 per 1,000
of the mean population, the rate for last year being
l.l. For every 100 legitimate births registered
between 1885 and 1894 (inclusive), there were 5.14
illegitimate, the proportion for last year being 4.19.
