Enteric fever. Blood from 17 cases was examined, and the Widal
(Typhoid) reaction was obtained in 14.
Tuberculosis.- Sputum from eight cases was examined, and the
tubercle bacillus was found in four.
HOUSES LET IN LODGINGS.
329 houses have now been placed cm the register with beneficial
results. The definition however of the term “landlord” in the
bye-laws has given rise to difficulties, as a weekly tenant who sublets
some of the rooms is the “landlord” within the meaning of these and
not the “owner” who consequently has in some cases repudiated
any responsibility for the observance of the bye-laws.
It is advisable, moreover, that the rent limit, viz., 6s. for unfurnished
rooms, should be raised.
CUSTOMS AND INLAND REVENUE ACTS,
1890 AND 1891.
Certificates under these Acts were granted in respect of 212
separate tenements and refused in respect of 593.
COMBINED DRAINAGE.
Tenders for the reconstruction of 47 systems of combined
drainage at a cost of £1,066 were accepted by the Vestry
during the year and the sum of £175 was paid to owners
of houses in respect of drainage work executed by them in compliance
with the notices of the Vestry on combined drains, which were sewers
within the meaning of the Metropolis Local Management Act. The
prospect of an amendment of the present inequitable law relating to
combined drainage is still very remote.
SMOKE NUISANCES.
Proceedings were instituted by the Vestry in 15 instances
in respect of smoke nuisances, in 13 of which fines to the
amount of £52 4s. were imposed, and in two the summonses were
dismissed on technical grounds.
