been submitted to, and confirmed by, your Council. The
traders expressed their willingness to co-operate in
bringing about a much needed reform, and I am pleased
to state that, so far as our district is concerned, a great
improvement has been effected. In two cases plate glass
windows have been installed. No meat is allowed to be
hung or exposed for sale beyond the door and window
frames, nor is the window allowed to be open when the
ground in dry and dusty.
In one or two cases cautions have been necessary,
but this has been largely due to the weakness of the
Regulations themselves which allow an open front for a
stall, and also to the slackness with which the Regulations
have been interpreted and enforced in other districts.
Generally speaking, however, the meat traders of the
district are to be congratulated on the manner in which
they have endeavoured to carry out the spirit of the
Regulations.
Your Sanitary Inspector devotes a large amount of
his time to the inspection of meat. Whenever possible,
carcases and all offal are inspected at the time of
slaughter. Meat marking, which only appears practicable
in the case of larger districts where there are wholetime
inspectors employed, has not been adopted in this
district.
