There is also being erected in the district at the
present time a large factory for the manufacture of
glass and fine stained glassware which will eventually
provide employment for a large number of persons and
increase the housing demands of the district.
SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE
DISTRICT.
WATER SUPPLY.
The water supply of the district is wholely by the
Colne Valley Water Company, and is quite satisfactory.
The supply is a constant one, and of good quality.
DRAINAGE AND SEWERAGE.
99.7 per cent, of the houses in the district are
drained to the public sewers. The remaining few
are on the extreme outskirts of the district and are
provided with cesspools. All houses are provided with
water closets.
The Surveyor reports that the Sewage Disposal
Works are treating the sewage in an efficient and
satisfactory manner. Improvements are being continually
carried out in the way of providing more channels
for the aerating and final treatment of the
sewage before its discharge into the watercourse, which
is practically dry during some of the summer months,
the principal discharge during this period being from
the sewage effluent. No complaints have been received
from the Middlesex County Council who are
the River Authority.
Cricket bat willows are planted between the
aerating channels. These take up some of the sewage
matter, and will ultimately prove a source of profit
towards the expense of working.
SCAVENGING.
The house refuse is collected weekly and conveyed
to the garbage destructor at the Sewage Disposal
Works. About one half of it, principally organic
refuse, is destroyed in the destructor, and the remainder
is tipped on ground at the works.
All streets are well scavenged, roads being
attended to each day and kept clear of horse droppings
and as free from dust as possible, this being conducive
to the general health of the district.
