throughout the country, will greatly assist in saving
the lives of many of these children. One hundred and
seven children were vaccinated in the district during
the year 1920.
NOTIFICATION OF BIRTHS.
All births were notified to the Medical Officer of
Health. A few notifications were delayed later than
the period allowed under the Act. These people were
reminded of their liability and instructed to be more
careful in the future. The Health Visitor paid 1630
visits to the homes of infants whose births were
notified.
PHYSICAL FEATURES AND GENERAL
CHARACTER OF DISTRICT.
The Urban District of Wealdstone was formed in
June, 1894. It has an area of 1,072 acres. The shape
of the district is very irregular, the surface is for the
most part flat, but rises gradually towards the North
and West. The sub-soil is clay. Estimated population
13,743, largely composed of the industrial classes.
A large proportion travel to London daily to their
employment, and many others come in daily from
surrounding districts for employment at the various
local factories.
The rateable value for Poor Law purposes is
£88,067 10s., and the assessable value for General
District Rate, £76,973. The mileage of roads maintained
by the Local Authority is about 9¼ miles. Both
gas and electricity are supplied in the district. The
amount of Outdoor Poor Relief expended in 1920 was
£648.
The London hospitals are generally used for cases
that require hospital treatment. There is no local
hospital, but some cases, especially accidents, are
treated in the Harrow Cottage Hospital, and a few in
the Cottage Hospital at Stanmore when beds are
available.
The staple industries of the district are:—
Printing.
Photographic Works.
Cabinet Works.
Brush Making.
Tin canister making.
The manufacture of glass tubes for chemicals and
ampules.
