INFANTILE MORTALITY.
Fourteen infants died under one year of age—five
males and nine females—affording for the district an
infantile death rate of 67.9 per 1,000 births. For 1916
this rate was 63.0 per 1,000.
Under the Notification of Births Act the Health
Visitor has been very assiduous in the performance of
her duties, and has shown tact and ability in dealing
with the various classes of homes she has had to visit.
She attends the weekly Clinic held in connection with
the Wealdstone Maternity and Child Welfare Centre.
I have very much pleasure in acknowledging the useful
work done in the interests and welfare of expectant
and nursing mothers and infants at the Crêche and
Clinic. The work is carried on in co-ordination with
the Health Authority. It will be found that the recent
order to provide Food Cards for all new-born infants
so that the mothers may receive extra food before and
after parturition will be attended with most satisfactory
results. The usual leaflets in regard to the prevention
and treatment of epidemic diarrhoea and allied disorders
of children were distributed through the district early in
the summer, and we were again practically free from
any epidemic of this nature.
INFECTIOUS DISEASES.

One hundred and sixty four cases of notifiable infectious diseases occurred during the year. They are classified as follows:-

Scarlet Fever4
Diphtheria11
