and ventilated, and kept in good sanitary condition. We
have no underground buildings of this description in the

HOUSING OF THE WORKING CLASSES, &c.
House accommodation for all classes of residents is
ample but the rents of the working-class houses run very
high in proportion to the wages earned by working-men,
and this conduces to encourage over-crowding in the
poorer quarters of the district. There is much work to
be done in the way of systematic house to house inspection.
Some houses which are believed to require special
attention are already on the list and have been inspected
and where necessary notices served. Special attention
is given to water supply; closet accommodation; drainage;
the condition of the house in regard to lighting,
ventilation, dampness, and cleanliness; the paving,
drainage and sanitary state of yards and out-houses
belonging to the houses; the arrangements existing
for the deposit of refuse and ashes; and as to any
defects or conditions which might tend to render the
premises dangerous or injurious to the health of the
inhabitants, or others living near.
All dwelling-houses in the district are supplied with
water-closets and 99.7 per cent, drain into the sewers.
We are still without any Public Conveniences in
any of the thoroughfares but it seems very desirable, now
that the population has reached the point it has, that
these should be supplied in the principal streets.
SEWAGE DISPOSAL WORKS.

Sewage Disposal Works has now been practically completed,
and the official opening took place in September.
