BAKEHOUSES.
There are six of these within the district. Notices have
been served in two cases to remove gullies from inside the
bakehouse. In one case a great improvement has been
effected both as regards accommodation and the ovens. One
remains in a very unsatisfactory condition, but the plans for
a new one have been prepared and an undertaking given that
its erection shall be proceeded with at once. Otherwise the
requirements of the Act will have to be enforced.
Dairies, Cowsheds, and Slaughter-houses. — There
are eleven dairies, four cowsheds, and 3 slaughterhouses in
the district. These have been periodically inspected and
generally found in a satisfactory condition.
The Mortuary has been used for three bodies and two
post mortem examinations. The pc?ible apparatus for disinfecting
bedding and clothing has been used on several
occasions and has been found to work very well.
SANITARY INSPECTIONS, &c.
Various complaints of nuisances have been dealt with.
They consist chiefly of defective drains and water closets,
dampness of houses and premises, and accumulations of
refuse. Five cases of overcrowding have been dealt with,
63 houses were inspected, and 105 re-inspections made; 17
notices were served; 34 caravans were moved on by aid of the
police. This appears to be a growing nuisance, and should
always be promptly dealt with as these people are a standing
danger to the community. Twenty-five workshops and three
schools were inspected; 27 rooms were fumigated and 15
stripped.
The dust has been collected fortnightly for nine months
in the year, and weekly during July, August, and September.
There are a few houses in a very dilapidated condition,
and scarcely fit for human habitation. A report on these will
be submitted to the Council shortly, and it will probably
be necessary to have them closed. They are bad in a sanitary
respect, being damp, dirty, and dilapidated, and I believe them
to be unsafe structurally.
