PUBLIC CLEANSING.
The Contractors responsible for this duty have given
good service during the past year and the use of the new
type of vehicle referred to in my previous report has given
every satisfaction.
The refuse is collected once each week.
SMOKE ABATEMENT.
The smoke nuisance from the Metropolitan Railway
Works at Neasden mentioned in my Report for 1932 has,
I am glad to say, given very little trouble and undoubtedly
every effort has been made to improve the conditions.
MORTUARY.
The existing arrangements with the Hendon Borough
Council for the use of its mortuary remain in force and are
satisfactory.
SCHOOLS.
The Middlesex County Council is the responsible
Authority for schools in the area and any defects in the
sanitary accommodation brought to their notices received
immediate attention.
OPEN SPACES AND ALLOTMENTS.
During 1933 the Council purchased a further 30 acres
of land for open space purposes and negotiations are in
progress for the acquisition of an additional 36½ acres.
The demand for allotments is exceedingly small and it
has not been necessary to acquire any additional land for
the purpose.
HOUSING.
There appears to be a greater demand for flats than in
previous years, many applications having been received by
the Council from developers and builders. This appears to
be the tendency in most districts. One can only suggest
that a certain class of persons prefer to have this type of
accommodation, paying inclusive weekly or monthly rents,
rather than take on the obligations of purchasing houses.
There are no houses in the district which are unfit for
habitation.
