2. Rivers and Streams.—The principal river in the
area is the Mardyke, which rises above Bulphan and
Orsett Fens, proceeding through Stifford into the
Purfleet District. There are various small streams, and
near the Thames many are tidal. They receive the
effluent from the Council's Sewage Works at Orsett and
Stanford-le-Hope and the private Sewage Works at
Orsett and Linford.
3. (i.) Closet Accommodation.—During the year the
following were undertaken:
Number of Pail Closets converted to W.C.'s. 81
„ Privies converted to Pails Nil
(ii.) Public Cleansing.—Public Cleansing has been,
as in the past, carried out by contract under the supervision
of this Department, and no complaint has reached
me in the matter. I believe that the system adopted
by the Council has been satisfactory, efficient, and of
low cost.
Dried house refuse is collected by public contract
and removed in covered horse-drawn vehicles. It is
disposed of by a modified system of controlled tipping,
except in Stanford le-Hope, where a small incinerator
exists. Special precautions are taken to ensure compliance
with the Bye-laws.
The collection of house refuse in the parish of
Bulphan was commenced by contract. It is most
desirable that wherever possible house refuse should be
collected at regular intervals.
Crickets on Tip at Corringham.
Serious complaints were received from several
houses in Church Road, Corringham, and on investigation
it was found that they originated from a tip in the
near vicinity. Expert advice was obtained and steps
are being taken to avoid a similar nuisance in 1936.
