Purfleet district. There are various small streams, and
near the Thames many are tidal. They receive the
effluent from the Council's Sewage Works at Orsett,
and private Sewage Works at Orsett, Linford and
Stanford -le-Hope.
Creeks.—The three main creeks are: (1) Fobbing
Creek, which receives private sewage; (2) Mucking
Creek, which receives sewage from private works and
Stanford-le-Hope; and (3) Shell-Haven Creek, which
also receives private sewage.
Drainage and Sewerage.—Steady progress has
been made in this direction, an indication of future
activity throughout the area as urbanisation proceeds.
The parish of Little Thurrock is sewered throughout,
only two cesspools remaining. In Stanford-le-Hope the
old Sewage Works, established in 1892, have become
inadequate, and a comprehensive scheme has been
completed for extensions to the same and also to drain
the adjoining parishes of Horndon-on-the-Hill and
Corringham. Only 20 houses are not connected with
main drainage. In the outlying parts of Horndon-onthe-Hill,
outside the main drainage area, there are 108
properties unconnected. South Stifford is completely
connected to the Thurrock, Grays and Tilbury Joint
Board's main sewer, and the district known as the
Nutberry Estate, in the North Ward, is also sewered.
In the remaining portion of the North Ward there are
27 cesspools. In the parish of Orsett a complete
scheme has been inaugurated for sewering the Baker
Street area. At present 35 houses are connected, and
the remainder will probably follow shortly.
Sewage Disposal.—A large portion of the western
area of the district drains to the Disposal Works of the
Thurrock, Grays and Tilbury Joint Sewerage Works.
The works are situate 1¼ miles north-east of Tilbury
Station and consist of Sewage Disposal Works with
Sedimentation Tanks and Circular Revolving Distributors
on Bacterial Beds.
