Report of the Medical Officer of Health. 123
Butter.
During the year 409 samples of Butter were submitted, and
it is noteworthy that in no case was Margarine present. The
only sample reported against was found to contain 0.23 per cent.
Boric Acid in excess of the maximum permissible.
In every sample the presence of preservative was looked for,
and if present the quantity estimated, with the result that 310,
or 75.8 per cent., were found to be free (except from common
salt), whilst 98, or 23.9 per cent., contained Boric Acid in quantities
under 0.5 per cent., the remaining one being reported
against as above.
Margarine.
Of the five samples of Margarine reported against, two formal
samples were found to contain an excess of water, whilst
two informal samples contained an excess of butter fat, the remaining
informal sample having excess of water.
All samples of Margarine submitted during the year contained
a Boric preservative.
Drugs.
Adulteration in the case of eight samples of Drugs (four
formal and four informal) was reported as follows:—
Two samples of Syrup of Squills (one formal and one informal)
contained an excess of Acetic Acid.
Two samples of Camphorated Oil (one formal and one informal)
had been compounded with a mixture of Sesame and
Mineral Oils, instead of Olive Oil.
Two samples of Tincture of Iodine (one formal and one informal)
were found to be deficient in Potassium Iodide, and two
(one formal and one informal) contained an excess of Iodine.
All formal samples were taken as a consequence of the informal
samples having been adversely reported against.
