An inspection of the side entrances and manholes where the poison
was placed a few days after baiting, it was found that approximately
two-thirds of the baits had been eaten and many dead rats were found.
There is no doubt that a considerable number of rats was also washed
away by the water.
During the same week the London County Council laid over 1,400
baits in their sewers in this Borough, of which approximately 900 were
consumed.
In view of the considerable success which resulted from this annual
campaign, we considered that the baiting of the sewers should be undertaken
at least twice each year by all local authorities acting together.
Removal of Aged and Infirm Persons. It was not found necessary
to apply to the Court for any Orders during the year.
Swimming Baths. At all the Baths maintained by the Borough
Council a chlorination plant is installed and periodical sampling is
conducted to ensure that a high standard of water purity is maintained.
Twelve samples were taken in 1935.
Sewerage and Drainage. All drainage work, except in new
buildings, whether done voluntarily by the owner or as a result of
Notices under Statute, is supervised by the Sanitary Inspectors. The
drainage in connection with 50 premises was entirely reconstructed
during the year, in 127 instances partly reconstructed, and in 154 premises
the drains were unstopped and cleansed.
Flooding. Certain portions of the Borough, notably the Clifton
Hill area, are liable to flooding in times of heavy rainfall. Some
flooding occurred on the 25th June, when all affected premises were
visited with a view to the abatement of any insanitary conditions.
Closet Accommodation. All closets are upon the water-carriage
system with the exception of two earth closets, located in a position
inaccessible to a sewer.
Street Cleansing. The Borough is divided into 42 sweepers'
districts, each man having a special vehicle comprising two galvanised
steel containers in a frame mounted on a chassis fitted with pneumatic
tyred wheels. The containers are detachable, and are collected by
motor vehicles and replaced with empty bins which have been cleansed.
