accept institutional treatment this year, with an easy mind,
knowing that their children were being well cared for.
The usual meetings of the Standing Conference of Metropolitan
Borough Tuberculosis Care Committees were held at the County
Hall, and many matters relating to the welfare of tuberculous
patients were discussed. Our Chairman was again elected
Chairman of the " Conference "—a tribute to his well-known
interest in Tuberculosis Care work.
We are pleased to be able to report that several of our tuberculous
families who have been living under particularly bad and
overcrowded conditions, have been granted accommodation on the
London County Council's estates, preferential treatment being
given to such cases. We feel sure that the improved conditions
under which they will live will be beneficial, not only to the
patients, but to those in contact with them, particularly the
children. Although our housing problem cannot be demolished
at the same rate as the slums, because unfortunately overcrowding
is not confined to slum areas, we feel that we can look forward to a
great improvement in conditions generally. Developments of the
nature referred to are of extreme importance in connection with
the work of prevention, and it is most encouraging to observe
that causes are being recognised and attacked, as well as the
effects being dealt with.
A report on Care work is incomplete without an acknowledgment
of the help and co-operation extended to the Committee by
the local organisations, both public and voluntary, working in the
Borough, and we desire to take this opportunity of thanking
them.
