S.E. 14.
30th May, 1933.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors of the
Metropolitan Borough of Deptford
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to present my fourth Annual Report upon the
sanitary circumstances, sanitary administration and vital statistics of
the Borough. It is customary, in order to form some general idea of
the public health, to take into account certain figures obtained from the
birth and death returns and infectious disease notifications.
The birth-rate for 1932 was 15.9 per 1000 population as compared
with 16.3 in 1931.
The death-rate in 1932, as compared with 1931, showed a slight
rise, viz., from 12.0 to 12.2 per 1,000 persons.
The incidence of infectious disease generally showed some increase,
but the cases were mainly of a mild type.
In the section dealing with the sanitary circumstances of the
Borough, the work of the Sanitary Inspectors is outlined. During
1932, the volume of work, whether judged by the number of inspections
made or sanitary improvements effected, reflects great credit upon the
Inspectorial Staff.
The housing situation so far as existing property is concerned
remains the same difficult problem. Continual vigilance is required to
keep property—much of it suffering from the defects incidental to its
common use by two or more families—in an even reasonable habitable
condition.
