premises being used as dwelling houses for human habitation until, in
the judgment of the Council, the same were rendered fit for the purpose.
These orders were not complied with, the houses were therefore
demolished.
4, Amery Place.—A closing order was made prohibiting the use of
these premises for habitation. The order was determined, the dwelling
house being rendered fit for occupation.
CAYAN TERRACE.
I have to report that I have inspected the above premises on several
occasions, and am of the opinion that the court should be dealt with
under Section 9 of the Housing Act, 1925, and the houses closed, as
owing to their cramped position, lack of air space and the character of
the property they are in such a condition as to be dangerous and
injurious to health.
The property consists of ten cottages in a cul-de-sac which is reached
by way of a built over entrance between Nos. 45 and 47, Surrey Row.
Each cottage consists of two rooms, one on the ground floor and
one over it.
The paving of the court itself is 2 ft. 6 in. lower than the paving of
the side walk of Surrey Row, and the floors of the ground floor rooms
are level with the paving of the court.
Although air-bricks exist, there are signs of dampness in the walls
One of the worse features of the property is the badly-lit and
ill-veutilated condition of the whole.
There is a window in each room in the front, but none at all at the
back, so that with the exception of the back door to each, giving entrance
to a tiny slip of a yard, they are virtually back-to-back houses.
No. 10, standing by itself, is a back-to-back house.
They are not supplied with sufficient natural light, as they are
hemmed in to a large extent by higher contiguous buildings ; on the
east is the printing factory of the Co-operative Printing Society, about
65 feet high, on the south by the Surrey Row houses, about 30ft high,
and on the west by property in Nelson Square, about 50 feet high.
The cottages themselves are about 19 feet to the parapet.
The air space between the fronts of the cottages and the backs of
the Surrey Row property varies.
